ICANN To Introduce New Domain Names

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced that it will be releasing new domain names for general use by the summer of 2008. Currently, there are 250 working domain suffixes, the most popular among which include ".com", ".net", ".org", or ".uk" (for Europe), and ".us" (for the United States). According to ICANN CEO Paul Twomey, the new names are in lieu of the increasing number of Internet uses and the growing number of themes and industries. Theme-based domain extensions include ".xxx" for adult sites, or ".jobs" for career sites. ICANN is also developing a new system for choosing the domain extensions, in a bid to control name grabbing and arbitrary suffix creation. The Generic Names Supporting Organization is presently discussing the working procedures, which are likely to be adopted by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the new names, which have yet to be identified, will be reviewed and officially introduced next year, possibly between June and August. The addresses will be in English. |
